Getting started
What is Ferrite SDK?
Ferrite SDK is the ready-to-use, binary distribution of the Ferrite game engine. It includes the editor and project tools, the engine runtime, starter templates, and documentation.
Do I need to compile the engine or write C++?
No. The engine is supplied as a prebuilt runtime. You create game logic with Schematic, C#, or a combination of the two; an engine C++ compiler toolchain is not required.
How do I find out when Ferrite SDK is available?
Check the Steam section on the overview page for availability and release updates.
AI compatibility
Can I connect an AI assistant to Ferrite?
Yes. The FerriteMcp editor plugin provides a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server so compatible AI clients can work with the open editor and project. Open Window > AI Tools to enable the server and set up a client. The server is off by default, listens only on your local machine, and limits available actions by its permission setting.
Which AI clients can connect?
The AI Tools panel provides setup for Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Muse Code, OpenCode, Cursor and VS Code. It can also copy connection settings for Claude Desktop and other MCP-compatible clients.
Scripting
What is Schematic?
Schematic is Ferrite's visual scripting language. You create classes, add components and connect typed graph nodes in the editor, then run the gameplay in the engine.
Can I use C# and Schematic in the same project?
Yes. A project can combine Schematic graphs and C# scripts, so you can choose the approach that fits each part of your game.
What do I need to build a C# project?
C# projects require the .NET 10 SDK from Microsoft. Schematic-only projects do not need a separate compiler.
What can I make with the starter templates?
The SDK includes starter projects for both Schematic and C#, including first-person and third-person examples. You can use them as learning projects or as a base for your own game.
Platforms
Which operating systems and processors are supported?
Ferrite SDK supports Windows, macOS and Linux on x64 and ARM64 systems.
Which graphics APIs does Ferrite use?
Ferrite uses DirectX 12 on Windows, Vulkan on Windows and Linux, and Metal on macOS. Your system needs a GPU that supports the graphics API for its platform.
Multiplayer
Does Ferrite include multiplayer features?
Yes. Projects use a fixed-tick, server-authoritative simulation. The engine provides LAN sessions, with prediction and replication handled by the engine.
Does this include online matchmaking or hosted servers?
The SDK overview describes LAN sessions. It does not promise a hosted matchmaking service; plan your online services separately if your game needs them.
Packaging and licence
How do I package my game?
Use Package Project in the editor to cook content and stage a standalone game folder, with an optional zip archive. The package contains what the game needs to run, not the SDK.
Do I owe royalties on games made with Ferrite?
No. Ferrite does not charge royalties on games you create or sell.
What licence applies to games I make?
The SDK licence describes the rights and conditions for distributing your packaged games. Read the Ferrite SDK licence terms before release.
Can I modify the Ferrite engine itself?
The SDK contains the prebuilt engine runtime, not engine source code, headers, libraries or debug symbols. See the licence terms for the full conditions on using the SDK.
Where can I read more about project scripting?
The SDK includes documentation for building games with Schematic and C#. Start with the guides installed with the SDK, and use the overview page for a tour of its tools and workflow.
